? The following is the text of an article published in the April 1989 issue of Office Systems Magazine, page 24: "EVALUATING LEVELS OF SURGE PROTECTION Prior to 1988, there was no standard to go by in selecting a surge protector. You just made comparisons based on joules or added "bells and whistles" that meant little to performance. Now we are fortunate to have a standard that rates the level of protection surge protectors provide. The standard is set by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., (UL). Called 1449, UL developed the rating to measure the amount of voltage that passed through a surge protector once it has "clamped." A surge protector with a UL 1449 rating of 330 offers the most protection possible, and a UL 1449 rating of 6,000 offers the least. UL 1449 is a mandatory test for all surge protector manufacturers desiring a UL listing. Getting sufficient protection--and your money's worth--means looking for the UL 1449 endorsement."
